Prepare for your claims appointment
Gather what you have
- DD-214 or other separation papers, if available.
- Relevant medical records and treatment information.
- Previous VA decisions and letters, if applicable.
- Supporting statements and a list of questions.
Ask your representative which documents apply to your situation. Use the VA claims checklist and filing guidance for current requirements.
Military records & benefit letters
Need a DD-214? VA explains how to request military service records through the National Archives. VA also says it will request your DD-214 when it receives your benefits application, so you don’t need to obtain it yourself through the Archives for that application.
Disagree with a VA decision?
Read your decision letter and discuss your options with an accredited representative. The available process and deadlines depend on your decision and circumstances.
