Advocacy and Benefits Support

The VFW Department of Washington Service Division assists Veterans, family members, and survivors with benefits and entitlements. Accredited Service Officers help applicants understand eligibility, prepare claims, gather supporting evidence, respond to VA requests, and navigate the benefits process.

Assistance is provided without charge. Benefit eligibility and final decisions remain the responsibility of the appropriate government agency.

Bring as many of these records as possible. Complete documentation can help the Service Officer evaluate your case and prepare an initial claim more efficiently.

Documents to bring to your appointment

  • DD Form 214 or other separation documents for every period of military service
  • Marriage certificates and applicable divorce decrees
  • Birth records for dependent children
  • Service treatment records or other military medical records
  • Current medical records showing a diagnosis or ongoing disability
  • Medical evidence or statements connecting the condition to military service
  • Previous VA decisions, rating letters, or pending claim correspondence
  • Government-issued identification and any documents requested by the Service Officer
