From Armistice Day to Veterans Day
Veterans Day is observed each November 11 to honor America's Veterans for their service to the nation.
The date traces its history to the armistice that ended major fighting in World War I. The armistice took effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month in 1918.
November 11 became a legal federal holiday known as Armistice Day in 1938. In 1954, Congress changed the name to Veterans Day so the observance would honor American Veterans of all wars.
Veterans Day continues to be observed on November 11 regardless of the day of the week on which it falls.
