Before you shop

Confirm the current collection list first. Needs change by unit, destination, season, dietary restrictions, and available storage. Send only new, unopened items.

What belongs in a troop box?

Build a useful, balanced box

Choose a mix from each category. Individual portions are easy to carry and share, while factory-sealed packaging protects the entire shipment.

Category 01

Food items

Shelf-stable, portable, and easy to open. Avoid fragile packaging and anything that needs refrigeration.

  • Protein or energy bars that will not melt
  • Beef jerky, meat sticks, or shelf-stable tuna and chicken pouches
  • Nuts, sunflower seeds, and individually wrapped trail mix
  • Peanut butter or nut-butter packets
  • Crackers, pretzels, popcorn, and sturdy single-serving snack packs
  • Instant oatmeal, ramen, soup cups, and microwave meals when requested
  • Dried fruit, fruit snacks, hard candy, mints, and gum
  • Powdered drink mixes and electrolyte packets
  • Instant coffee, tea bags, and hot cocoa packets
  • Individual hot sauce, seasoning, and condiment packets

Category 02

Personal items

Basic hygiene and comfort items are often appreciated. Keep fragrances mild and package toiletries away from food.

  • Toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss
  • Solid deodorant—never aerosol
  • Unscented body wipes or baby wipes in travel packs
  • Bar soap and travel-size shampoo or body wash
  • Disposable razors and non-aerosol shaving cream
  • Lip balm, fragrance-free lotion, and non-aerosol sunscreen
  • Foot powder, cotton swabs, and nail clippers
  • Feminine hygiene products
  • New ankle socks or moisture-wicking boot socks
  • Lens-cleaning cloths and individually wrapped lens wipes

Category 03

Other items

Morale boosters and practical extras make downtime easier and add a genuine connection to home.

  • Handwritten letters, thank-you notes, and children’s drawings
  • Playing cards, compact travel games, and puzzle books
  • Paperback books and current, appropriate magazines
  • Pens, mechanical pencils, small notebooks, and journals
  • Resealable storage bags in assorted sizes
  • Small sports items, such as a foam ball or compact flying disc
  • Simple seasonal decorations that are lightweight and nonflammable
  • AA or AAA alkaline batteries in original packaging, only when requested
  • Black knit caps or gloves for cold-weather destinations, when requested
  • A short note identifying the community group that packed the box

Pack smart

Five steps from donation to delivery

Military mail can travel for weeks and pass through extreme temperatures. Careful preparation protects every item in the box.

  1. 01

    Confirm the need

Ask the project coordinator for the current wish list, deadline, destination climate, dietary concerns, and recipient information.

  2. 02

    Choose durable goods

Select new, factory-sealed items. Favor a long shelf life, sturdy packaging, and products that tolerate heat and rough handling.

  3. 03

    Separate and seal

Place food and strongly scented toiletries in separate resealable bags. Double-bag liquids and powders.

  4. 04

    Pack tightly

Use a sturdy box, fill empty space, cushion fragile items, tape every seam, and place the heaviest items at the bottom.

  5. 05

    Check the ZIP Code

Use the USPS restrictions tool and complete the customs form with specific, accurate descriptions.

Shipping safety

Do not place these items in a troop box

Some familiar household products are hazardous or prohibited in international and military mail. Destination rules can be stricter than the general list below.

Important: USPS requires military mail to be addressed to a specific person or an authorized job title. Mail addressed to "Any Service Member” or similar wording is prohibited.

Always verify the exact ZIP Code. APO/FPO/DPO restrictions vary by destination and can change. When in doubt, use the USPS Military Restrictions tool before packing or mailing.

  • Explosives, ammunition, fireworks, matches, and other prohibited hazardous materials
  • Gases, flammable liquids or solids, corrosives, and many aerosol products
  • Intoxicating liquor and controlled substances
  • Standalone lithium batteries, power banks, or lithium batteries packed separately from equipment
  • Used, damaged, defective, or recalled devices containing lithium batteries
  • Any medicine, supplement, or restricted item barred by the destination ZIP Code or applicable rules
  • Perishable, opened, expired, leaking, or poorly sealed food and liquids
  • Glass containers or other fragile items likely to break in transit
  • Chocolate, gummies, candles, or other heat-sensitive items for hot-weather destinations
  • Anything prohibited by USPS, Department of Defense, Department of State, or destination-country rules

Address it correctly

Keep military mail in the military postal system

Use the recipient’s full name, rank when applicable, unit, APO/FPO/DPO designation, and the exact ZIP Code supplied for the destination. Include a complete return address. Do not add the foreign city or country name. USPS currently recommends using the full 9-digit ZIP Code when it is available.

Check before sealing the box

Mailing requirements change. Use the exact destination ZIP Code and verify any item you are unsure about.

This guide summarizes USPS requirements and established military-support organization recommendations. USPS, Department of Defense, Department of State, and destination-specific requirements control whenever they differ from this general guide.
