From the Badge of Military Merit to today's medal
The Purple Heart traces its heritage to August 7, 1782, when General George Washington created the Badge of Military Merit. The modern Purple Heart was revived on February 22, 1932, the 200th anniversary of Washington's birth.
Today, the medal honors its recipients, remembers those who died, and acknowledges the families and communities who share in the lasting effects of wartime sacrifice.
