Born to Defend a New Nation

The United States Navy began during the American Revolution and has protected American interests at sea for more than two centuries.

The Birth of the Continental Navy

On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress authorized armed vessels to intercept British ships carrying military supplies. That action established the foundation of the Continental Navy.

In 1972, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Elmo R. Zumwalt authorized official recognition of October 13 as the birthday of the United States Navy.

From those first vessels, the Navy developed into a global force dedicated to defending the United States, protecting freedom of navigation, supporting allies, deterring aggression, and responding during conflict and crisis.
