Semper Paratus Always Ready

Maritime Heritage

A Proud Maritime Legacy

From protecting America’s waterways to saving lives at sea, Coast Guard members have answered the call with courage and professionalism for more than two centuries.

Established August 4, 1790

The United States Coast Guard traces its history to the Revenue Cutter Service. Ten cutters were authorized to enforce federal tariff and trade laws, prevent smuggling, and protect the young nation’s maritime interests.

Today, the Coast Guard protects the nation through maritime safety, security, environmental protection, search and rescue, law enforcement, and national defense missions around the world.

Its members serve in demanding conditions with a commitment reflected in their enduring motto: Semper Paratus Always Ready.
